Successful SEA Annual Meeting Closes Out 2018
Over 150 SEA members, sponsors, and friends gathered in Washington, DC on December 12, 2018 for the SEA Annual Meeting at the Mayflower Hotel. The meeting was designed as a forum for SEA members to learn more about the association’s programs and successes for the year, plans for 2019, to celebrate public service excellence, and to network and mingle ahead of the holidays.
SEA presented multiple awards over the course of the meeting:
SEA Pioneer Awards - given to the original SEA Members who have demonstrated decades of support for SEA and its missions. Pioneers became SEA Members in January 1980 and have supported SEA through all of its stages in the past and continue to do so moving toward the future. SEA Pioneer members include Arturo A. Jacobs; Allen G. Woodhouse; John L. Martin; Arlie B. Siebert; and Dr. Jagdish Chandra. Dr. Chandra attended the meeting and provided remarks.
SEA Public Service Media Award - given to a member of the media who provides consistently excellent coverage of a broad range of Federal government management and leadership topics, reports equitably on the issues, and is respected by peers and readers for unbiased and accurate reporting about very complex and contentious issues.
SEA honored Nicole Ogrysko of Federal News Network with this award.
SEA Congressional Public Service Leadership Award – given to policymakers who demonstrate commitment to excellence in public service by supporting a strong, merit based civil service.
SEA honored Senator James Lankford (R-OK) and Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) with this award. Congressman Connolly received the award in person and delivered remarks thanking SEA members for their dedication to public service.
The meeting also included the close-out program of this year’s SEA-YGL Mentor-Protégé program. Most of the 40 pairs of mentors and protégés participated in the meeting together and were celebrated for their completion of the 6-month program. SEA is always looking for additional executive-level mentors for next year’s program – if you are interested in volunteering, please contact mentoring program coordinator Steve Lee at firstname.lastname@example.org.
SEA leadership also explained new opportunities for members to inform the association’s work, as well as to get involved as volunteers through involvement in agency and location-based chapters and on the SEA Policy Task Force, Membership Task Force, and Communications Task Force (descriptions below).
SEA has heard the requests from members to expand programming and networking opportunities outside the DC area. In 2018 groundwork was laid for piloting chapters in approximately 10 cities around the country with a concentration of feds, often in cities hosting a Federal Executive Board (FEB). We also introduced two new chapters in 2018, the Department of Energy chapter and the White House Leadership Development Program (WHLDP) Alumni chapter, the leaders of whom each spoke at the meeting. SEA Policy Task Force
Work with the SEA Board Policy Committee, SEA President and SEA Executive Director to determine the issue areas (legislative and administrative) that SEA should focus on. Topics that may be considered by the task force include talent management, SEA reform, civil service modernization, human capital policies, hiring reform, ECQs and assessments, organizational and individual performance management, etc. The task force will review and provide insight and input on policy proposals that SEA is building, and provide feedback on policy proposals SEA is reviewing. This task force will convene primarily via phone and email, with infrequent in-person meetings. The members of this task force serve as advisors and subject matter experts, providing personal input (not representing an agency or job position).
Membership Task Force
As a professional association, SEA is driven by member interests as well as a desire to provide services and outreach to the broader community with the common goal of building the leadership profession. This task force will work with the SEA Board Membership committee to identify member needs (whether it is coaching, professional development opportunities, trainings, networking, news & research, etc) and will serve as advisors to the SEA President and Executive Director on member programming and marketing content. This task force will convene primarily via phone and email, with infrequent in-person meetings. The members of this task force serve as advisors and subject matter experts, providing personal input (not representing an agency or job position).
Communications Task Force
How can SEA better share information, what information is needed by SEA members, and identifying stories of best practices, innovative programs and other happenings around government that would be of interest to members. Members of the task force will work with the SEA President and SEA Executive Director to determine areas of focus and ways to identify content. This task force will convene primarily via phone and email, with infrequent in-person meetings. The members of this task force serve as advisors and subject matter experts, providing personal input (not representing an agency or job position).
Members are invited to provide feedback on professional development discussion topicsprofessional development discussion topics that will inform 2019 programming by January 31, 2019. SEA will be offering more webinar-based and regional programs in 2019, with more details coming soon.
