One of SEA's benefits for its members is "expert information and advice about personnel policies and procedures." Members have obtained suggestions on strategy to use to protest an unfair performance raiting, to negotiate an Intergovernmental Personnel Assignment, or to apply for the last-move-home benefit. When the situation warrants, we refer members to our lawyers at Shaw Bransford & Roth P.C., for their two free ½ hour telephone consultations, which is also a member benefit (assuming that Shaw Bransford & Roth P.C. do not have a conflict of interest).
SEA staff is here to help members wherever and however they can, so this benefit sometimes goes beyond advising on these subjects. SEA's staff has been known to give advice on such issues as where a member could obtain health insurance for her soon-to-be 22-year-old daughter, the tax deductibility of SEA dues, or even recommendations on choosing a financial advisor or executive coach.
Because of the small size of the staff, everyone helps to answer members' questions. When Jason Briefel is available, he is the primary advice-giver on matters relating to SES personnel issues. When Jason is not available, President Bill Valdez fields the calls, as does our Membership Administrator on matters relating to membership, and our Communications Director on matters relating to articles in ACTION or use of the internet. Our Administrative Assistant handles calls relating to registering for member events and to the purchase of SES logo items and flags.
