Susan Yarwood (DHS)

Priorities: I have three priorities, and they are simple:  First, to advocate for a strong civil service.  Second, to locate and leverage talent for public service.  And third, to ensure the senior career leadership is collectively recognized as a critical institution - providing effective, non-partisan stewardship of the Executive Branch.  A strong, agile, and interdependent Executive Corps is fundamental to these priorities.  We do great things individually and collectively.  But we’re not always our best champions or story-tellers.  To that end, the SEA provides meaningful insights, development, advocacy and recognition.  I’ve reached the point in my career that I’d like to contribute to our collective interests – help share our good stories and build on institutional successes.  Specifically, I’d like to work on SEA strategic communication and membership.  I’d also be interested in working on executive succession planning, (with a particular emphasis on senior leader development) as well as any civil service reform projects of interest to the Association.

SEA and other volunteer experienceI’ve been a lifetime member of the SEA since my first SES assignment in 2006, recruited new executives for the SEA and provided recruitment opportunities via SES training (APEX) in DoD.  I am on the Key Executive Leadership Board at American University.  My other volunteer work has focused on my family and community – numerous positions in the Girl Scouts, church lay committees, local school and community sports teams and, most recently, a ten-year member of the Parents’ Council at Elon University.
