On December 13th, 2018 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Senior Executives Association and Senior Executives Association Professional Development League will host the 2018 Presidential Rank Awards Leadership Summit, a full-day event offering exceptional educational, mentoring, and networking opportunities for current and aspiring government leaders.

The event will include:

  • Lunch Awards Reception Recognizing Meritorious Rank Award Winners & Evening Awards Reception Recognizing Distinguished Rank Award Winners
  • Expert Policy Panels and Educational Training Seminars Across Multiple Content Tracks on Advancing Public Leadership
  • Small-Group Speed Mentoring and Dedicated Networking Opportunities with Career Federal Leaders

The Summit will feature educational tracks that address the three most pressing areas of concern for Federal career senior leaders, including: Future of Work, Future of Workforce, Future of Workplace.

The conference will also recognize the extraordinary public service of senior career professionals by honoring the 2018 Distinguished and Meritorious recipients of the Presidential Rank Awards. The Presidential Rank Award represents the top award a civilian federal employee can receive, awarded by the President of the United States to the top 1% (Distinguished) and 5% (Meritorious) of federal employees, as nominated by their respective agencies. In 2017, more than 300 Senior Executives were among the event's 500 attendees.

Message from Your SEA President

SEA’s six new Communities of Change are prepared for liftoff in September…and we want you there at the launch.

When I became President of the Senior Executives Association in September 2016, I conducted a listening tour that included over 100 organizations and dozens of SEA members.   The most common request I heard was to develop ways for senior career leaders to become engaged in important Washington policy debates.  To help make career leaders a part of the solution to difficult challenges facing career leaders.  And to bring the wisdom and experience of career leaders to the halls of Congress and to the Administration.

Our answer?  Communities of Change in Acquisition, Cybersecurity, Fiscal Accountability, Governance Innovation, Human Capital Leadership, and National Security.  We announced the formation of the Communities in May, have been signing up members since then, and have now completed the selection of the co-chairs who will lead the six Communities.

August is usually the slow season in Washington.  Congress is on recess.  Many of the hallways at Federal agencies are quiet as feds try to squeeze in a few extra days at the pool or the beach.  City streets are less crowded and schools are vacant.

At SEA, however, we are working overtime to launch the Communities in September.  We are holding planning meetings with Community Co-Chairs in August to map out the agenda for each Community over the next year.  This is preparatory to all six of the Communities holding their first meetings in September and begin working on transformative projects and issues. 

  • The Human Capital Leadership Community is focused on building leadership as a profession within the Federal government.
  • The National Security Community will look at the “force of the future.”
  • The Cyber Community is preparing a “Cyber Handbook” that contains all of the information and strategies a non-cyber career leader needs to know to be a successful program leader.
  • The Fiscal Accountability Community will examine how to appropriately manage risk.
  • The Governance Innovation Community is focused on how to develop accountability frameworks for programs and staff that incentivize risk while rewarding high performance.
  • The Acquisition Community will examine ways to transform acquisition processes using new technology and adapting best practices from the private sector and leading public sector institutions.

It’s not too late to join in on the fun.   During the month of August, we will be issuing Member Alerts that identify the Community Co-Chairs and the date/location of their first meetings.
