More Misguided Legislation from House Oversight Committee

SEA sounds off on new SES 'reforms'

Today the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will mark-up another iteration of the Senior Executive Service Accountability Act. In response, Tim Dirks, Senior Executives Association (SEA) Interim President, issued the following statement:

“Once again, this legislation misses the mark. In an effort to tout their dedication to ‘accountability,’ majority leaders in the Congress continue to push forward with the singular focus of carving out paths to summarily terminate career Senior Executives.

While there are critical challenges facing the SES and the system is certainly in need of reform, current Congressional efforts are being driven by a handful of isolated cases that have gained media attention. As members scramble to gain political advantage and attach their names to would-be solutions, they fail to address the real issues and in fact create more serious problems by sending a dangerous and discouraging message that those who enter or consider entering the SES will be met with a ‘guilty until proven innocent’ style of justice. As this animosity and rhetoric grows it only serves to encourage talented, able executives to retire and discourages highly qualified candidates from applying for their positions – thereby weakening our government and the nation it serves.

SEA has repeatedly reached out to Congressional members, and will continue to do so, in an effort engage in comprehensive, constructive reforms that will enable employees to better serve the American public. There is an untold story of the thousands of accomplishments Senior Executives achieve on a daily basis to guarantee that the government works better for the citizens of this country. As those who come here to give voice to those citizens, Congress should make every effort to ensure that they provide support to and arm these civil servants with the proper tools to successfully carry out their mission.”

Last year, similar legislation was introduced and passed through the House, but did not gain traction in the Senate.
