Project Next Generation
Welcome to SEA's Project Next Generation Webpage
Although SEA has been encouraging the development and nurturing of emerging federal leaders for many years, Project Next Generation is meant to formalize, organize and coordinate efforts both within SEA and with affinity organizations. SEA looks forward to partnering with the African American Federal Executives Association (AAFEA), the Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN), The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the Society of American Indian Government Employees (SAIGE), Young Government Leaders (YGL), and similar organizations to promote the continual and complete development of the next generation of leaders.

The success of the SEA/YGL mentoring partnership was due in large part to the dedication and diligence of YGL Chief Learning Officer Miguel Aviles. Miguel's office at the Department of Defense nominated Miguel for a Human Resources Leadership of Greater Washington award in the category of mentoring. SEA submitted a letter of recommendation in support of the nomination. We are happy to report that Miguel received the award in a ceremony on June 11, 2014. Click here to view the press release.
SEA/YGL mentoring partnership.
SEA kicked off Project Next Generation with a mentoring partnership with YGL. This is the follow-up to SEA's successful SEA/YGL mentoring partnership of 2012-2013. However, at that time, SEA members mentored approximately 20 YGL mentees. For the 2013/2014 partnership, SEA members will be mentoring 55 – 60 mentees.
The program will be six months in length, and the matching process has been completed. SEA has asked the mentors to make an initial contact with their mentees prior to the program's kick-off event (a happy hour in DC in early November). The program requires that the mentors and mentees meet for a minimum of one hour each month. SEA and YGL plan to host a number of networking events, some small in nature such as lunch and coffee events where mentor pairs are clustered together.
There is still time to become part of this uplifting and rewarding adventure in mentoring with YGL. There are still approximately 40 – 50 YGL candidates who are looking for mentors. So, if you are interested in becoming a mentor, please contact Bob Knisely, SEA's Director of Project

SEA and YGL will be reaching out to mentors and mentees from the 2012/2013 mentoring project for their feedback, and will use their comments to develop good mentoring practices and tips to distribute to current participants. SEA will also post those practices/tips on this webpage, as well as books on mentoring that have been suggested by our participants.

Flash mentoring and other mentoring opportunities for SEA members who are GS-14s and 15s.

Interaction with the African American Federal Executives Association (AAFEA): On September 17, SEA and former Project Next Generation Director Melanie Stinnett participated in the AAFEA annual leading change workshop at the Marshall Conference Center, Department of State. SEA made a presentation on the Challenges Facing the Senior Executive Service.

Interaction with the Asian American Government Employees Network (AAGEN)
AAGEN is conducting an SES development program. On February 18 and 19, 2014, SEA members participated in mock interviews for the 2013/2014 development program.
