Professional Liability Insurance

Professional Liability Insurance

Justifying and defending decisions has become commonplace for today's federal executives and managers. The scrutiny and questioning associated with contracts, spending, process streamlining, and executive decision making has caused an increase in the number of federal executives seeking legal counsel due to complaints, EEO, IG and congressional investigations, and disciplinary actions.

The Senior Executives Association strongly recommends that executives have professional liability insurance, especially since agencies are required to reimburse executives, managers and supervisors for up to one-half the cost of their liability and legal defense insurance (a requirement SEA proposed and secured legislation to effect in 1996).

SEA endorses Federal Employee Defense Services (FEDS). Depending on the policy you choose, FEDS pays up to $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 of professional liability damages and the legal defense of federal executives, managers and supervisors who are sued for any acts, errors or omissions which are committed or arise out of the course and scope of employment. FEDS also pays for up to $200,000 for legal defense for an administrative investigation and up to $100,000 for legal defense for any criminal proceeding or investigation resulting from any act, error or omission committed or alleged to have been committed while rendering a professional service.
